Burlington County Retirees' Education Association

ORGANIZED 1959

BCREA & NJREA became unified as of September 1, 2011.  With a few exceptions, all BCREA members must also be members of NJREA.

Payment of the NJREA portion of the unified dues includes membership in NJEA and NEA-R.  Therefore, payment of unified dues will include membership in:

BCREA – Burlington County Retirees’ Education Association
NJREA – New Jersey Retirees’ Education Association
NJEA – New Jersey Education Association
       NEA-R – National Education Association-Retired

These organizations work to preserve and enhance your retirement benefits ( pension, social security, and medical coverage).  The efforts of the NJREA and NJEA are essential in maintaining these benefits.

PURPOSE

To advance the interests and welfare of our members by serving as a unified county affiliate of the New Jersey Retirees' Education Association (NJREA), New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), and National Education Association - Retired (NEA-R).  Involvement in these associations helps BCREA members stay informed about public education issues.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership is open to anyone who retired from employment in a New Jersey public school district and is enrolled in the Teachers Pension and Annuity Fund (TPAF) or the Public Education Retirement System (PERS).  Also welcome are retirees from other state schools, colleges, universities, institutions or agencies operating under the education statues and /or laws of the State of New Jersey.

BCREA unified with the state association (NJREA) as of September 1, 2011.  As a result, BCREA members must also be members of NJREA, with two exceptions.  Anyone who is 75 years of age or older (born before September 1, 1936) is grandfathered and does not have to join the NJREA.  Also, anyone who was a lifetime member of BCREA prior to September 2, 2011 is not required to be a member of NJREA.  Since NJREA is affiliated with NJEA and NEA-Retired, one dues payment (see dues section below) includes membership in four associations; BCREA, NJREA, NJEA, NEA-R.

ORGANIZATION

The governing body of the Association is the Executive Committee which consists of the officers (President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer) and chairpersons of the standing committees.

MEETINGS/ACTIVITIES

The Executive Committee meets at least five (5) times each year.

Two General Membership Meetings (luncheons) are held in October and May. Members may attend all meetings.  Reservation forms for the luncheon meetings are published in our newsletter.  Many of our members also participate in BCEA activities such as the Heart Walk, Mall Expo, Read-Across-America, and election phone banks.

DUES

NJREA sends membership information, including a membership application to all new retirees.  Current members are sent dues renewal notices in May of each year.  Members may pay dues on an annual (yearly) basis or they may opt for a lifetime membership.   Dues are used for association mailings and services to members.  BCREA Officers and Executive Committee members are volunteers.
