  NJEA FILED LAW AGAINST  STATE

NJEA  filed suit against the state over legislation that was recently passed which will take 1.5 percent of salary from public school employees for health benefits.
The mandatory contribution is in addition to any current contribution toward the cost of health insurance already negotiated and agreed to by school employees.

NJEA's lawsuit charges that the new law violates the collective bargaining rights of school employees, illegally reduces salaries for those employees, and violates several clauses of both the New Jersey Constitution and the United States Constitution.

OUR EFFORTS FALL SHORT
Despite valiant efforts by tens of thousands of public employees and retirees writing and calling their legislators and demonstrating in Trenton, the Legislature and Governor have undone decades of  progress made to make working conditions better and retirement more secure.
The immediate effect for retirees is the elimination of Cost of Living Adjustments to pensions.  The pension you have now is the one you will have next year, and the year after, and the year after, etc.,etc.,etc.  This legislation will also alter our health care but exactly what changes will occur is unclear and when the changes will occur is still to be determined.  For a list of the legislators and how they voted READ HERE.
